The Department of Health Region 1 (Ilocos) last week reported that there were 79 confirmed cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease in the region from June to July of this year.

At least 23 cases come from children in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, as confirmed by ABS-CBNwho cited the City Health Office.

Dagupan City health officer Dr. Ophelia River said they are closely monitoring the local situation while checking if there are also cases in other locations because of how fast the disease spreads.

A daycare center in Baguio City, which belongs to the neighboring Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), was reportedly recommended a 10-day suspension of classes by the Health Services Office after three pupils were diagnosed with the disease.

Child development worker Lourdes Castro said they were asked to clean the center to help avoid its spread.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a viral illness that usually affects children younger than 5 years old, but it can sometimes affect older children and adults too.

Symptoms include rashes and blisters in hands, feet, mouth, and different parts of the body, fever, and sometimes also a sore throat.

It should be noted that the hand, foot, and mouth disease cannot be contracted from animals. It’s not fatal, but is very contagious and can be spread from person to person through saliva and direct skin contact.

To lower the risk of catching the disease, the public should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water. It also helps to disinfect dirty items with alcohol. The best way to prevent catching the disease, however, is to ultimately avoid contact with infected people.
