What is PhilHealth

Young professionals usually don’t pay mind to health insurance and it’s understandable. It’s easy to forget about such things when you’re at the prime of your life. A good chunk of those who are employed rely entirely on PhilHealth for when they get sick. As per their official site, the program was created to “ensure affordable, acceptable, available, and accessible health care services for all citizens of the Philippines.” But is PhilHealth enough? If you get a medical scare, will it be enough of a cushion, expenses-wise?

Health insurance for freelancers

In her October 2014 blog, freelancer and financial advisor Lianne Laroya found out the hard way that it didn’t seem to be always the case. A brief trip to the E.R. back in 2013 cost her Php 4000+ because, as the E.R. nurse explained, she could only use PhilHealth if she were confined for a minimum of 24 hours. Needless to say, that incident made her realize that  relying solely on PhilHealth wasn’t the best option for her.

Florante Valdez, a freelancer and podcast manager, also explores the pros and cons of depending on PhilHealth for your medical needs in his December 2013 blog. He says that PhilHealth is a sound investment because it provides subsidies for drugs, laboratory exams, operating room expenses, etc. It also provides coverage for day surgeries, dialysis treatments, and cancer treatment procedures in accredited hospitals. You still need to pay out-of-pocket, however, for hospital deposits, optometric services, and minor oral health procedures. And while PhilHealth offers a useful 45-day allowance for your dependents, you have to know that this allowance is shared among them. It was because of these considerations that Florante decided to go look for the best health insurance plan for him and his family.

Lianne’s and Florante’s stories highlight the need for good and quality health care options for freelancers, families, and small companies that aren’t usually served by big HMOs.
